Guitarist Paul Binkley

Guitar — Classical - Latin -Jazz - Variety


Paul Binkley performs classical and jazz guitar, mandolin and other fretted instruments. He enjoys many styles of music including classical chamber music, Neapolitan songs, Brazilian choro, early music, new music and jazz. Paul performs solo and with a tango band, a mandolin quartet, a guitar/flute duo and a trio with guitar, mandolin and accordion.

Paul spent two years at Boston’s Berklee School of Music and completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a Master of Arts in Music degree at San Francisco State University, majoring in classical guitar performance.

Paul has performed as an ensemble player with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the San Francisco Opera, Ballet, and Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony and many other local orchestras. He has toured nationwide and recorded five CDs with the Modern Mandolin Quartet.

In addition, Paul has performed with the San Francisco Opera on lute, theorbo and renaissance guitar and contemporary classical performances on mandolin with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. He has had many performances of new music with the San Francisco Symphony.

Besides teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department, Paul is guitar instructor at Holy Names University and Mills College in Oakland, where he was guitar soloist on the Mills College Centennial Album. Other recording credits include the San Francisco Symphony recordings of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet on mandolin and Mahler's Seventh Symphony on guitar with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.
